Americký stafordšírský teriér
Předky Amerického stafordšírského teriéra označujeme Anglické buldogy a teriéry. Bližší příbuzní jsou Americký pitbulteriér a Anglický stafordšírský bulteriér, který se odlišuje lehčími kostmi a menšími rozměry. Plemeno je známé z 19. století. Standard stafordšírského teriéra byl poprvé schválen v „Americkém klubu chovatelů psů“ 10.června 1936. Později, v roce 1972, k označení přidali ještě slovo „americký“ a již jako Americký stafordšírský teriér je plemeno zaregistrováno v FCI. Ve východní Evropě se stali známí až v roce 1989 a rychle dobývali popularitu.
Svým nevelkým vzrůstem Americký stafordšírský teriér dělá dojem velmi silného a výkonného psa. Výška v kohoutku psů je 46 až 48 cm, a u fen 43 až 46 cm. Váha musí odpovídat rozměrům. Velká hlava je střední délky, lícní kosti jsou svalnaté. Čumák kvadratický, široký a vypouklý. Uši krátké, posazené vysoko. Oči jsou temné, široce umístěné. Nedovoluje se růžové zabarvení víček. Krk je silný a středně dlouhý. Hruď široká a hluboká. Přední nohy přímé, široce postavené, což dovoluje rozvinutí hrudi. Bedra mají silnou svalovinu. Ocas je posazen nízko, je krátký, přímý s tenkým konečkem. Srst je krátká, hustá a lesklá. Barva se připouští jakákoliv – jednobarevná i se skvrnami.
Psi tohoto plemene se chovají pro ochranu majetku a pro své vlastnosti i jako osobní tělesní strážci. Ale stafordšírský teriér potřebuje učit disciplíně, a to co nejdříve tak, jak dovoluje jeho svéhlavost a tvrdohlavost. Kromě toho všeho je stafordšírský teriér známý jako vynikající krysař.
Je to samostatné plemeno, které vzniklo ve 2. polovině 20. století. Bylo vyšlechtěno většinou pro výstavní účely. Úřední standard plemene byl zaregistrován až v roce 1972, ale již dlouho před tím bylo z Anglie do USA převezeno plemeno Stafordšírského bulteriéra, který byl přímým předkem našeho dnešního Stafordšírského teriéra.
Souboj mezi psy byl ve 30. letech 20. století velice oblíbený a chovatelům se podařilo vyšlechtit větší variantu anglického teriéra – Amerického teriéra. Zpočátku toto plemeno nemělo ustálený typ, což chovatele přinutilo přijmout všeobecný standard plemene.
