Rotvajler
Plemeno bylo vyšlechtěno v Německu ve 20. letech 19.století. Název dostalo podle města Rottweiler, střediska obchodu s dobytkem na jihu země. Zprvu byl rotvajler používán k lovu černé zvěře, později jako pastevecký pes k doprovázení stád a jejich nočnímu hlídání. Rotvajleři byli známi jako psi řezníků: zapřažení do vozíku převáželi maso, pomáhali hnát dobytek na trh a potom ochraňovali svého zbohatlého pána. V současnosti je rotvajler užíván jako spolehlivý služební pes a hlídač a populární je i na výstavách. V USA bylo plemeno uznáno v roce 1935, ve Velké Británii se objevilo r. 1936. Jde o plemeno pracovních psů skupiny dogovitých.
Mohutný, masívní pes s vyvinutou, objemnou muskulaturou, hrubé, silné konstituce. Hlava má širokou mozkovnu a výrazný stop. Uši jsou nevelké, převislé, tvaru trojúhelníku. Krk široký, s klenutou šíjí a přiměřěně vyvinutým zátylkem. Hrudník je hluboký, široký, okrouhlý. Záď krátká a široká. Končetiny rovné, přední daleko od sebe. Ocas je krátký, vysoko nasazený.
Rotvajler je plemeno s velmi vysokým intelektem. Je schopen přijímat úkoly mnoha různorodých směrů – od specializované činnosti u policie a u armády, přes výstavy, až ke sportovním závodům.
Jsou dokonalí také jako domácí mazlíčci. Jsou miláčky celé rodiny, což je nejspíše jejich hlavním posláním.

Předpokládá se, že počátek plemene je kdesi u pradávných pastýřských psů, kteří byli známí již v antických dobách. Současní kynologové se domnívají, že přímými předky tohoto „antického psa“ byli Tibetská doga nebo Tibetský mastif; jisté však je, že byl černé barvy a podobal se Newfoundlandovi. Výšku v kohoutku měl 90 centimetrů a vážil 75 kilogramů. Zvláštním specifikem tohoto antického psa byla masivní kostra a pevně vyvinuté svalstvo. Měl specifický tvar hlavy s dobře zřetelným přechodem od čela k čumáku. Jedinečné postavení ramen vzhledem k hrudní části, což bylo dobře zřetelné již z postavení předních tlap, mu umožňovalo dobře hýbat lokty. Toto zvláštní postavení tlap u před ostatními psy poskytovalo výhodu především v běhu a v soubojích s člověkem.
Je známo, že tito „staro-antičntí psi“ se do Říma dostali již v roce 79 př. Kr., a to společně s legiemi Claudia Augusta. Jak z dějin dobře víme, Řím během celých svých dobyvatelských dějin často válčil a potřeboval tedy pro své legie obrovské zásoby jídla a čerstvého masa. Za legiemi tedy vždy pochodovala obrovská stáda skotu. Z důvodu hlídání, dozoru i doprovodu těchto nepřehledných stád bylo těchto antických předků Rotvajlera velice zapotřebí. Jak legie postupovaly a válčily, zásoby živého masa se pochopitelně tenčily. A počet doprovodných psů se také zmenšoval. Římané je nezabíjeli, ale ponechávali je místním obyvatelům. Antická doba slávy legií trvala po celá staletí a předek Rotvajlera se tak rozšířil po celé Evropě. V jižním Německu tak vzniklo nové plemeno psů, které se nazývalo Římský pes. Rotvajler dostal svůj název po malém městečku, které bylo ve středověku jedním z hlavních obchodních center v Evropě, a které se v té době nazývalo Rotvajl-am-Neccar. Bylo zároveň hlavním místem obchodu s chlebem a skotem. Podle jedné z legend toto městečko za svůj název vděčí místní červené dlažbě (rote wil), kterou se v té době zdobily Římské paláce. Právě zde došlo k počátku šlechtění těchto psů, který byl určen především k doprovodu, ochraně a hlídání skotu, ale také ke hlídání obchodů, v nichž se prodávalo maso. 
V této době existovaly 2 druhy Rotvajlerů:
1.) větší a těžší, kteří se využívali jako tažní psi a také především k ochraně domů. Nehodili se však pro pastvu skotu, nezvládali dlouhé a těžké cesty a navíc byli agresivní a skot často smrtelně pokousali,
2.) menší druh byl vytrvalejší a chytřejší. Hodili se více jako pastýřští psi.
Jedna dávná legenda nám praví, že řezníci, kteří mířili výjimečně dobrý obchod a vysokou tržbu do hospody náležitě oslavit a zapít, dávali svým Rotvajlerům na krk měšce s vydělanými penězi, aby jich tolik neutratili. Reputace Rotvajlera byla natolik strašidelná, že se nikdo neodvážil jim tyto měšce vzít.
Jeden za znalců tohoto plemene, Hans Corn, napsal: „V údolí Rýna se vyvinulo zvláštní plemeno psů, které je možné popsat jako šťastný výsledek křížení nejlepších vlastností nejen římských válečných psů, ale také domácích pastýřských psů - anglických a dánských buldoků.“ V jiném Německém městečku, Rottenburgu, se až do dnešní doby zachoval znak se zobrazením býka a památného Rotvajlera. Rotvajler díky svým vynikajícím vlastnostem obdržel v roce 1910 úřední uznání od Prvního německého svazu policejních psů. Po dlouhou dobu nebyl Rotvajler za hranicemi Německa znám. Ve 30. letech 20. století byů přivezen také do Švýcarska, Rakouska a Ameriky. 
S vývojem automobilové a železniční dopravy a s nástupem přepravy skotu, odpadla nutnost jejich doprovodu i dozoru během přemísťování a v důsledku toho plemeno Rotvajlerů téměř vymizelo.
Když chtěli v Německu obnovit chov tohoto plemene, našlo se v celém státě pouze pár jedinců.
Popularitu tohoto plemene velice ovlivnil fakt, že v roce 1901 v Hamburgu jeden četník s pomocí svého Rotvajlera uklidnil dav opilých námořníků. Musíme ještě zmínit, že Rotvajler téměř necítí bolest.
První Rotvajleři zabarvení těch současných ještě neměli. V prvním standardu, který byl zapsán v roce 1901, byly zmíněny jeho černé pruhy na šedém pozadí s žlutými skvrnami, měl zrzavý čumák s úplně černým nosem. Byly povolené malé bílé skvrny na tlapách a hrudi, které se u nich v té době velice často objevovaly. Od roku 1923 se na výstavách demonstrovali pouze ti Rotvajleři, kteří měli černo-hnědou barvu a krátkou srst.
